The difference between a freshwater and a marine aquarium
A question every beginner asks — and the answer determines your budget, your time, and everything else after that.
1 — The main idea
Freshwater: Natural water without salt — rivers, lakes, canyons. It includes fish such as tetras, guppies, bettas, and shrimp.
Saltwater (marine): Seawater — salt, marine life, coral reefs, colorful fish. It is divided into two types:
- Fish Only — Seafood Only
- Reef Tank — Fish + Coral Reefs + Marine Life

Difficulty
- Fresh water: Suitable for beginners — forgiving of mistakes, no complicated equipment required
- Marine: Requires expertise — transactions are sensitive, any sudden change can harm the organisms.
Cost
- Freshwater: Much less — simpler equipment, cheaper fish
- Marine: Much higher — skimmer protein, special lighting, sea salt, expensive fish
Maintenance
- Fresh water: A simple weekly water change — tap water + chlorine treatment is sufficient
- Marine: Water change requires prior preparation — saltwater should be prepared at least two days in advance.

3 — Additional equipment for the marine
The marine aquarium needs additional things that are not available in the freshwater aquarium:
- Skimmer protein — removes organic waste from water
- Special sea salt — mixed with water in a precise ratio
- Hydrometer or Refractometer — measures salinity
- Special lighting — corals need specific light spectra
- Live Rock — Living rocks that act as a natural biological filter
